Your 2025 guide to major sporting highlights

With a new year comes new year resolutions. While for some of us this may involve new sporting goals, a new year also means a new sport calendar. Let’s take a look at some highlights in the professional sporting calendar for 2025.

The Australian Open will kick off the 2025 Tennis Grand Slams in Melbourne, with qualifying taking place from Monday 6th January and the main draw starting on Sunday 12th January. Reigning champions, of the men’s and women’s singles, Jannik Sinner and Aryna Sablenka, will be joined by a number of British players competing to make their mark. In the women’s singles Harriet Dart, Francesca Jones and Lily Miyazaki will be joined by household name Heather Watson to battle their way through qualifiers to the main draw. After ending her career high campaign last time out in 2024, Katie Boulter will be seeded in her entry to the main draw. She will compete alongside; Jodie Barrage, who has recently won the W100 Dubai, Sonay Kartel, who won her first WTA tour level title at the Jasmin Open in 2024, and Emma Raducanu who marked her return from injury last year and finished her season reaching the semi-finals in Great Britain’s Billie Jean King Cup. In the men’s singles, after his best season to date, British No.1 Jack Draper will lead the British line-up in the main draw alongside; Cameron Norrie, looking to follow in Raducanu’s footsteps and continue his successful bounce back from injury, they will be joined by Jacob Fearnley who broke into the top 100 for the first time last year. In the qualifying for the men’s singles, Britain will be represented by Dan Evans, Jan Choinski, Paul Jubb and Billy Harris.

The Invictus Games, SuperBowl LIX and ICC Champions Trophy will take us through February with the next big event taking place at Augusta National Golf Club from Monday 7th April to Sunday 13th April where golfers will try to get their hands on the Masters green jacket. The first tournament round will begin with an hononary tee-off on Thursday 10th April. Scottie Scheffler won the tournament for the second time in 2024 and continued on to gain a total of 7 PGA tour wins in 2024. Tommy Fleetwood was the highest English finisher last year, T3, ahead of Tyrrell Hatton, T9. Could Tommy Fleetwood find his first PGA tour win at Augusta this year? The London Marathon will see out April’s sport, taking place on Sunday 27th leading us into a busy few months for sport.

Golf, rugby union and tennis all feature in May with football taking the limelight with the FA Cup Final, Europa League Final and Champions League Final all taking place this month. Manchester United will be looking to keep the FA Cup firmly in the hands of their men’s and women’s team on Saturday 17th and Sunday 28th respectively. Lazio currently sit top of the Europa League table with Liverpool currently in the top spot of the Champions League table.

June opens us up to the ICC World Test Championship Final which takes place at the same time as the US Open Golf and the world of motorsport with 24 Hours of Le Mans. The Ice Hockey Stanley Cup Final will see us out of June’s sporting calendar where the Florida Panthers may look to retain their title.

July is a busy month for sport with the Tour de France, World Aquatics Championship, The Open Gold and NBA finals all taking place. At Wimbledon, Carlos Alcaraz will look to go for his 3rd consecutive title while Barbora Krejcikova will be wanting to defend her title. The possible highlight of July will be the UEFA women’s Euros in Switzerland. Holders, England, fought through their qualifiers to finish 2nd in their group earning them a place in Group D alongside France, Wales and the Netherlands. With a number of key players from the 2022 winning squad currently out with injuries, Sarina Wiegman will be hoping they bounce back in time and on form for this major tournament.

After a busy few months, August seems quieter for the sporting calendar with the US Open Tennis and Rugby Union World Cup. While the World Athletics Championship in Tokyo, the UCI Cycling Road World Campionships, Ryder Cup and the Women’s Cricket World Cup in India look set to see us through September.

MLB World Series will be the focus for October and the Los Angeles Dodgers will be wanting to show their strength to come out on top again. The ATP Finals will finish the tennis campaign in November when the 2025/2026 Ashes series will take us onto the new year. With Australia retaining the Ashes in England last time out, England will want to regain the urn on Australian ground.
